Logo design: small character, dark background and daily applications

Logo should maintain readability beyond a large presentation. It is worth checking small sizes, different backgrounds and simplified applications before the project is finally accepted.

Rate the sign where it will be used

A large logo on neutral background can look good, and in the header of the site become difficult to recognize. Prepare a list of real places: site, business card, document, avatar or small icon. Not all have to use the same variant.

Start with the most common applications for the company. If most materials are digital, the design should be tested in the interface, not just on effective visualisations of packaging that the brand does not use.

Check details reduction

The decrease reveals too thin lines, tight gaps and small additions. Do not solve every problem by expanding the logo throughout the project. Sometimes you need a simplified variant or you need to cancel an additional password on a small scale.

For example, a full name with a business description can operate on company paper, and a small icon requires a recognizable symbol itself. The relationship between variants should be designed and described, rather than improvised on export.

Rate light and dark surfaces

Check the contrast and visibility of each element of the sign. The reverse color itself does not always give the right effect, especially with multi-colored composition or transparency. The single-colour variant should also be consciously prepared.

Use:

  • the smallest planned size;
  • bright and dark background;
  • a representative photo, if such use is envisaged;
  • one-colour version;
  • the neighborhood of other characters;
  • a longer arrangement of the name, if any.

Save conditions for correct use

After attempts, specify the options available and the situations of their use. Do not leave the team with the task of removing parts of the character independently. Files and instructions should allow repeatable result. More about preparing materials can be found in Transfer of the logotype and rules for identification in the team.
