Design of business cards: information hierarchy and readability

The card is intended to help identify the person and return to contact. Check how to choose information, determine their order and evaluate the project before printing.

Start by sending your card

The design of the business cards should correspond to how the company makes contacts. Other information is needed after the trade meeting and other information at the reception of the facility visited by the customers. Think about what the recipient should remember and how easy it will be for you.

Not every communication channel needs to be on a small surface. Select the data you actually have and need. A long set of social profiles may make it difficult to find the phone number or page address that your customers use most often.

Establish three levels of information

The first level is the recognition of a brand or person. The second one explains the role, specialization or reason for contact. The third one contains data enabling action. Their order and visual strength should be conscious of the decision, rather than the result of which field was added at the end.

Use intervals and typography to group information. You do not need to distinguish each line in a different color. If all elements are equally strong, the recipients are harder to determine where to start. Logo also needs space, rather than just maximum magnification.

Example: business cards of several people

Prepare the project on the basis of the longest name, position and email address in the team. The layout checked only on short data may not work after the introduction of another person. It is better to establish the rule of breaking a poem than to reduce the font each time.

If some people have an additional number or specialization, check these options before approval. The business card system should maintain consistency, but not force empty fields or accidental shifts.

Watch the project outside the screen

Print the sample in real size. Rate the phone readability, characters in the email address and thin elements of the logo. Expanding the design on the monitor may hide problems that will occur after printing out a small format.

  • Check all the data of the sign after the sign with the card owner.
  • Rate the contrast and size of the smallest information.
  • Confirm format and requirements of the selected printer file.
  • If you are using QR code, test the ready sample and destination address.
