Your own website can present experience, projects and interests. A good portfolio gives the audience context: what was created, what was your role and what the work involved.
Select works matching the next step
Start with the portfolio goal. Otherwise, you choose materials to search for work, or to obtain orders or document your passion. You don’t need to show each project. More importantly, the recipient understands the range of skills and can quickly find something related to his needs.
Lay down work according to the readable key. It may be a type of task or a area of specialization. The chronological order can be useful, but it does not always best show the current direction of development.
Describe your contribution
In teamwork, distinguish the responsibility of the portfolio author from the effect of the entire team. Instead of the general “realising the website” write whether it was about research, interface, text, code or coordination. If you show exercise or concept, call it directly.
An example description may contain a problem, limitation and justification of one decision. It does not have to pretend to be an extensive case study. The recipient should see both the result and the sense of the choice that led to it.
Ensure material and readability
Before publication, check the possibility of using photos, characters and project fragments. Delete data that must not be disclosed. If a public presentation of full material is not possible, prepare an agreed shortcut or your own demonstration example.
Notice:
- the signatures explaining the contents of the illustration;
- the readability of a small interface on your phone;
- file size;
- consistent project names;
- the possibility to watch work without an account in another service.
Make it easy to start a conversation
Next to the author, show the preferred contact and types of interesting tasks. Do not hide your email address only in graphics. Plan a regular portfolio review: You can describe and illustrate an external project without leaving an empty link.
