The old Flash service could display multiple screens at one address. When upgrading, you need to recognize which elements had their own links, and which were only animation states.
Save how to access information
Do not assume that each item of the old menu was a separate subpage. Sometimes the whole service operated inside one file, and the address did not change at the transitions. In another project there were additional HTML pages, documents or references to specific materials.
Collect available copies, old links and menu descriptions. Do not start an unsupported player just to recreate the old view. We write about a safe approach to materials in Flash modernization guide.
Distinguish the subpage and the address fragment
In the new website, separate topics should have clear, working inputs. Google advises against using address fragments after the sign # for charging different application content. Navigation rules describe JavaScript SEO documentation.
This does not mean a ban on references to headers in one article. It is about distinguishing the transition to a place in the text from replacing the whole subpage with another content.
Assign saved materials to new sections
- Link the old service to its current counterpart.
- Check the files, galleries and documents separately.
- Mark historical material that is no longer covered by the offer.
- Save cases without an unambiguous counterpart.
You should not direct all previous entries to the main page just because such a variant is the easiest one. The user should be given the correct answer to the reason for opening the link.
Pick up the entrances from outside, too.
The new menu test is not enough. Open the saved addresses without going through the main page and check the content. The migration plan should include both search engine and links in messages, directories or printed materials. This restores access to information instead of just changing the appearance of the service.
