Internal links help recipients and searchers reach the content. It is worth checking not only whether they work, but also whether they lead to the right subject and are described clearly.
Collect the addresses and places that lead to them
The site may exist in the database, but remain virtually unattainable from the menu and other materials. Therefore, the review should include both a list of published subpages and links between them. The mere addition of an address to the site map does not solve the navigation problem for the reader.
Check especially new services, older guides and materials transferred during modernization. It is easy to preserve their content and accidentally remove the only sensible entry to it.
Assess the link between text and link
The link should announce the subject which the user will see after opening. The “check price list” label should not lead to a general website without valuation information. Similarly, the name of the service must correspond to the scope of the target page.
- Use descriptive names instead of a number of identical “more”.
- Add a link where it helps to develop the topic.
- Remove random links not related to content.
- After changing the scope of the article, check also the links leading to it.
Correct Wrong Goals at Source
If an internal link goes through several redirections, it is worth updating it to the right end address. However, do not remove the redirection needed by people using old external links. These two tasks perform different roles.
Keep a reasonable number of connections
There is no need to link each repetition of the same name. Excess links make reading difficult and obfuscuous. Choose places where further reading actually responds to the question of the recipient. The broader plan presents Information architecture. The overview of the links ends when important materials are available logically and connection descriptions help consciously choose the next step.
